Examples of Traumatic Brain Injuries Resulting from Accidents

Fox Law Office PLLC Will Protect Your Rights After Sustaining a TBI

This month, we’re blogging about examples of traumatic brain injuries resulting from accidents. Like we say on our website, traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, aren’t something we can see, and sometimes go undiagnosed. People of any age can sustain injuries at home or work resulting in TBIs, even from seemingly minor incidents. Whether or not you need legal assistance, the staff at Fox Law Office PLLC encourages TBI symptom awareness in everyone. TBI symptoms vary, from mild to moderate to, ultimately, severe.

How to Recognize & Identify Mild, Moderate, and Severe TBI Symptoms

Mild TBI symptoms can manifest as unusual sleepiness, severe headaches, plus frequent staring, and forgetfulness. There are moderate TBI symptoms, such as difficulty concentrating, loss of cognitive function, and atypical memory loss. Severe TBI symptoms include all of the aforementioned ones plus acute depression, significant mood swings, and seizures. If you or a loved one suffers any of these symptoms, they might have resulted from a TBI. Common TBIs include concussions, skull fractures, and hematomas.

The Differences Between Concussion, Skull Fracture, & Hematoma TBIs

A concussion is a TBI that often causes instant loss of alertness or awareness. Concussion symptoms can occur a few minutes to a few hours after the TBI event. Skull fractures are breaks in the skull bone. This type of TBI includes linear, depressed, diastatic, and basilar skull fractures. Hematomas are blood clots; these types of TBIs usually result in intracranial hematomas. They’re classified by their locations in the brain—either epidural, subdural, intracerebral, or diffuse axonal injury hematomas.

The TBI Domino Effect

Let’s say you’re driving a motorcycle without a helmet (which we’d never recommend) and you crash. Your head makes contact with the pavement, causing a skull fracture. Upon receiving imaging of the TBI, the treating physician also notes a subacute subdural hematoma. This type of hematoma can occur with a concussion.
